The (short) story of JaC64
After many years of avoiding to buy a PC
(I was a Commodore only person before ;-) I finally bought myself
a 500 Mhz PC (1998). Since I'd been programming Java a lot and had
heard complaints about Java's performance I thought that
a perfect performance test (and a fun project) would be
to implement a C64 emulator in Java. I started the development
by reading a lot of the C64 and 6510 documentation available
on the Internet (googling a lot ;-). A few days later I had
the first version of JaC64 booting the C64 basic - allowing
some peeking and pokeing, but had no features for loading
programs and did only have text-mode implemented. Another
thing I was very interested in was to implement a software
synthesis in Java. A very good start would of course be to
implement the SID chip in Java - for JaC64. If you have sound
on, you will hear a (bad) emulation of the SID chip.
I'll add a longer story of JaC64 later some day... until then,
have fun playing some C64 games!
